La Réunion - aerial photographs

10.11.2011 - Flying, Travel

Our launch site Colimaçons at 1500 m.a.s.l. was often right at the cloud base. The humid sea air is pushed by the wind to the slopes and so the typical weather situation arises during the day: On the slopes cloud shadows and on the sea pure sun. But at this cloud base it was possible to fly super, you only had to be careful that the good thermals didn't push you into the clouds, or if they did, you had to spiral quickly back down out of the white. The launch site was not to be topped even by Swiss standards: There were two huge, carpeted areas for launching and hardly any branches or stones that could get tangled in the lines. We can often only dream of that at home. Only the slope was somewhat very flat. Some older pilots who did not bring enough thrust from the legs to the ground during takeoff, therefore often got stuck involuntarily in the first sugar cane field.

Spread over the two weeks we could enjoy many wonderful flights. Whether long or short, the view was mostly unforgettable. We could fly until sunset and then relax and land on the landing pad on the beach below. Impressive were also the flights over the open sea with a view down to surfers in the waves and the blue, clear water with the coral reefs. A wonderful flying area. I can only warmly recommend.
